cheyenne-feature-imageCHEYENNE, Wyo., (July 22, 2015) – At the midway point of the 119th Cheyenne Frontier Days, rodeo fans had a rare treat. They watched as the first-round leaders changed in seven of eight events.
The biggest jump on the leaderboard was in saddle bronc riding. 2012 World Champion Jesse Wright catapulted to the first-round lead with the highest score so far in any event at the “Daddy of ‘em All.”
His ride on David Bailey Rodeo’s Spider was eight points higher than previous leader Justin Caylor. Wright is one of four brothers who competed in saddle bronc riding at last year’s National Finals Rodeo (NFR). His younger brother Spencer is the reigning world champion, oldest brother Cody has won two world titles and his twin brother Jake was reserve world champion in 2013. Nephew Rusty is sixth in the 2015 world championship standings.
None of the bronc riding Wrights have won a Cheyenne Frontier Days championship, a title that is on every professional rodeo cowboy’s bucket list.
Kyle Irwin of Robertsdale, Ala., was the first cowboy to change the leader board when he wrestled his steer in 6.3 seconds, seven-tenths of a second faster than the previous leader, Wisconsin’s J.D. Struxness. Irwin, the 2014 Ram National Circuit Finals Rodeo champion, learned from three-time world champion Steve Duhon who was the 1986 champion steer wrestler here.
Texan Aaron Pass had held the bull riding first-round lead since the opening performance on Saturday. That was until former collegiate champion Tim Bingham of Honeyville, Utah, conquered Championship Pro Rodeo’s Swamp Dog with 85 points. Bingham won his college title while attending Hill College, a powerhouse of collegiate bull riding whose cowboys have won six championships in the past decade.
Marty Yates of Stephenville, Texas, took the lead in the first round of tie-down roping with a 10-second run. Yates, who qualified for his first NFR last year, is one of the toughest young tie-down ropers in the business.
Two-time college national champion bareback rider Orin Larsen of Inglis, Manitoba, rode Stace Smith Rodeo’s Storm Cloud for 85 points. That edged him into the first-round lead by one point over Minnesota cowboy Tanner Aus. Larsen won his collegiate titles as part of the Oklahoma Panhandle State University team.
While Texans Trevor Brazile and Patrick Smith didn’t take the team roping outright, their time of 8.3 seconds tied them for the first-round lead with father-son duo J.B. and Levi Lord of Sturgis, S.D. Brazile, the 21-time world champion, won the team world title in 2010. Smith has two team roping world championships, one while roping with Brazile in 2010.
Whit Peterson of Torrington, Wyo., scored 75 points to take the first-round lead in the rookie saddle bronc riding event.
All competition on Thursday will be in the second round. Rodeo action gets underway at 12:15 p.m.
