History

This show had its inaugural launch in 1972 in Amarillo, Texas, which made it the first world show hosted by the American Quarter Horse Association. At one point, the AQHA World Show made several moves, the first moving from its first home in Amarillo to Tulsa, Oklahoma, then later moving to Fort Worth, Texas. Its final stop in 2008 landed them at the State Fair Park in Oklahoma City where it has occurred since then.

The history of the AQHA started in 1940 when quarter horse owners and breeders came together to preserve, advance, and honor the quarter horse as a breed. Although the association was formed in 1940, it had its first registered horse in 1941. That horse was the infamous “Wimpy”, setting the standard for the breed for years to come. After that initially registered horse, the association continued to build a foundation of horses that are still widely recognized in horses today.
