Big money, top stock, and the best cowboys and cowgirls in the country were found at the 40th Annual 2016 Dodge City Round-Up Rodeo in Dodge City, Ks. Named one of the most decorated events in Professional Rodeo history, the non-profit event is held during Dodge City Days, a community wide and area wide event, taking place each year in late July or early August. This year’s rodeo was held from August 2-7, at the Dodge City Rodeo grounds.
The rodeo started in the summer of 1977 and had slim 175 contestants and just a small payout of $8,200. The rodeo has now grown to five full nights of action with more than 700 entries to compete with a payout to contestants of nearly $340,000.

Due to the activities held at the rodeo appealing to participants of all ages and audiences, coverage of this rodeo was essential. The Ak-Chin Indian Community, the Earnhardt Auto Centers Road Team, and Cowboy Lifestyle Network took coverage of the week’s events and networked with the fans, by covering one of the top rodeo’s in the nation.

The Dodge City Round-Up contained exciting new events along with the traditional ones. This Professional Rodeo Cowboy Association competition contained exhilarating untraditional events such as Bull Fighters Only (BFO), Xtreme Bulls, and Mutton Bustin, which kept the fans thrilled and on the edge of their seat from beginning to end. The traditional events that took place included: Saddle Bronc Riding, Bareback Riding, Calf Roping, Steer Wrestling, Team Roping, Bull Riding, and Barrel Racing.
The arena was filled with professional cowboys and cowgirls and their fans who came to cheer them on. This event is the second largest community event held in the entire state of Kansas and is only promising more growth in the future. The competitors who perform each year bring more try and grit gaining more spectators and fans after each performance.

I am a 23-year-old from the small town of Hitchita, Oklahoma. I was raised in the well known Duvall steer wrestling family, so I am no stranger when it comes to the sport of rodeo and western lifestyle. I have two brothers, and the three of us have all competed in the National Intercollegiate Rodeo Association. I am an Oklahoma State alumni where I majored in Agricultural Communications and Agribusiness. I am now a third grade teacher. When I am not writing stories or in a classroom, I enjoy camping with my family, feeding cows, traveling, going to rodeos, meeting new people, and eating dutch oven dinner.
