CALDWELL, Idaho (Aug. 20, 2021)— Loni Lester from Gonzales, Texas is hoping to make history at the Caldwell Night Rodeo as the first breakaway roping champion crowned in the D&B Supply Arena.

Lester competed in that event as well as barrel racing while attending Sam Houston State University in Huntsville. She qualified for the College National Finals Rodeo all four years and in 2017 was the National Intercollegiate Breakaway Roping champion. She took advantage of her rodeo scholarship and earned her bachelor’s degree in Animal Science. Now, she is pursuing her dreams in the rodeo arena.

While she didn’t place in the first round, she had a very solid 3.2 second run during slack on Monday. She came back Friday night and had the fastest run of the performance at 2.7. That got her a second-round check for $1,833. Then combined with her previous time, she moved into the top two women who have qualified for Saturday night’s Championship Finals.

Lester is following Erin Johnson from Fowler, Colorado who had a time of 2.3 seconds to win $2,108. While the women were separated by four-tenths of a second in the round, only one-tenth separates them in the overall standings.

Regardless of what happens during Saturday night’s rodeo the breakaway ropers have been a welcome addition to the 97th edition of the Caldwell Night Rodeo and when one of them is crowned a champion and makes a victory lap around the arena, it will be a first.

Kaycee Feild made a bid for his third Caldwell Night Rodeo championship. The five-time and reigning world champion is also defending his 2019 title here. He won it the first time in 2012. Feild from Genola, Utah, won the first round here with an 87-point ride on Outlaw Buckers Rodeo’s American Thumper. That added $3,145 to his checking account and he stands to increase it substantially Saturday night.

The Championship Finals at the Caldwell Night Rodeo will start at 8 p.m. on Saturday.

Jesse Hopper from Mangum, Oklahoma had the high-marked ride of his career at the Caldwell Night Rodeo. The 21-year-old scored 87 points on Powder River Rodeo’s Bone Breaker. He is currently second here. PRCA photo by Thomas Duncan.
