The 2018 Reno Rodeo is coming to a close and just like that, another successful year of rodeo fun is in the books for Reno, Nevada.
Since 1919, Reno’s “Wildest, Richest, Rodeo in the West” has celebrated a vibrant rodeo tradition that has continued the preservation of Nevada’s western heritage, promoted community education on the sport of rodeo and ranching history, and has been an economic force with millions of dollars going back into Reno’s community.
Alongside thrilling barrel racing and show-stopping bull rides, The Reno Rodeo has also been engaging its audience in themes of activism and awareness.
Over the past week, The Reno Rodeo has celebrated “themed” rodeo performances to raise awareness and show support for various causes. Patriotic Night showcases America’s armed forces and celebrates the brave men and women who serve our country. Another platform the Reno Rodeo supports is the Man Up Crusade Night which advocates for an end to domestic violence. These are just two of the various themes Reno has planned for its audience. One rodeo performance theme in particular has rocked the rodeo world and is celebrated at almost every national rodeo no matter how big or small. This campaign is, Tough Enough to Wear Pink.
Tough Enough to Wear Pink, sponsored by Wrangler, is a nationally recognized campaign that provides a platform for rodeos to raise awareness for breast cancer and fundraise for breast cancer research. Celebrating its 14th year, the Tough Enough to Wear Pink campaign continues to take over the rodeo world, encouraging rodeo fans and contestants to wear pink in support of the cause. The 2018 Reno Rodeo will be celebrating their own Tough Enough to Wear Pink night on June 22nd, 2018.
Since its foundation in 2004 by Terry Wheatley and Karl Stressmen, the TETWP campaign has raised over $26 million dollars for breast cancer research. With such success, TETWP is sure to make a splash in Reno this weekend.
Much of the money raised by the charity goes straight back into the community for local breast cancer charities. This weekend, make sure to visit the “Wildest, Richest, Rodeo in the West,” wearing your pink western shirts!
