Payson, Arizona Presents the 2025 Gary Hardt Memorial Rodeo

Written by

An Arizona tradition perfectly nestled in the heart of our beloved state, the Gary Hardt Memorial Rodeo is a must-see for both seasoned rodeo fanatics and curious newcomers. Calling Payson, Arizona home for 36 years, the Gary Hardt Memorial Rodeo serves as the perfect kickoff to a summer of thrills in the breathtaking Tonto National Forest.

As a frequent visitor of the Gary Hardt Memorial Rodeo, there’s nothing quite like cruising into Payson on the Beeline Highway and spotting the rodeo grounds from the car, a sight that inspires many fond memories for those who make this rodeo a regular stop during their summer adventures. A quick 90 mile drive from Phoenix, Payson sets the perfect stage for a weekend of high-energy rodeo action, community celebration, and family fun.

The Best in the Southwest!

Recognized as the “Best Small Town in Rodeo” by True West Magazine in 2011, Payson, Arizona truly lives up to its reputation. Home to the renowned ‘World’s Oldest Continuous Rodeo,’ held annually in August, Payson Pro Rodeo also takes pride in hosting the Gary Hardt Memorial Rodeo each spring. This exciting event draws thousands of rodeo enthusiasts from across Arizona and beyond, making it a highlight of the season.

Hardt’s Legacy Lives On

Originally part of the National Old-Timers Rodeo Association circuit, Payson’s springtime rodeo was renamed the Gary Hardt Memorial Rodeo in 1987 to honor the legacy of hometown hero Gary Hardt. Remembered for his exceptional skills as a bull rider and roper, Hardt exemplified a deep passion for rodeo throughout his career, even becoming a devoted member of the Rodeo Cowboys Association. Today, the event carries forward his enduring spirit, with proceeds dedicated to supporting local youth who have excelled in both academic and athletic pursuits.

“The Payson Pro Rodeo Committee is dedicated to keeping the Western Heritage and lifestyle alive in Rim Country through the production of the Annual World’s Oldest Continuous Rodeo and the Gary Hardt Memorial Rodeo. We will use our 501(c)3 non-profit status to support the community by awarding scholarships to deserving senior high school students in the Payson Unified School District for both academic and vocational studies, plus make donations to local Rim Country breast cancer support groups, seniors, underserved children, and veteran’s groups.”

“The Gary Hardt Memorial Rodeo in Payson is hands-down one of my favorite Arizona rodeos. Set in the cool pines, it’s the perfect escape from the Phoenix heat—and an all-around incredible event. With the Coors Light RV on-site, it’s always a blast to be part of the action.”
