It’s time for the 73rd Annual Redding Rodeo coming up May 13-15, 2021 in Redding, California. Cowboy Lifestyle Network is proud to be partnering up with one of the best rodeos in the great state of California. It is going to be a jam-packed week of fun and rodeo. Check out the full schedule of events below and keep an eye out for tickets going on sale April 1st, 2021!
You wouldn’t know it by attending it these days, but at its inception, Redding Rodeo was a small, one-day event back in September of 1943. After going through a few different phases and having other names, the Redding Rodeo Association was born in the 1980s and that’s when Redding Rodeo started forming into the event that we see today.
But the Redding Rodeo isn’t just a rodeo, in a normal year, there are typically several days of events; Specials Kids day to celebrate the otherly-abled children in our area, Heritage Day where kids in K-4 learn what it is to be in a rodeo, be a rancher, a horse person and be responsible and respectful while learning about our local heritage. We will miss the Annual Steak Feed this year, but it touts to be the best party under the stars!
Another big partner of the rodeo is the Asphalt Cowboys, founded by local businessmen in 1954. Their annual BBQ is held in September and has one of the BIGGEST pancake breakfasts in the nation on the Friday morning of the rodeo to help many folks in our community. One more thing to look out for this year is the Annual Redding Rodeo Parade, held on the Saturday of the rodeo, it will fun for the whole family!
Of course, what would be the rodeo without all the affiliate rodeo clubs? The Redding Rodeo Association Auxiliary, have been the steadfast helpers of the rodeo since its inception. The Redding Women’s Rodeo Association (Originally the Posse-ettes) have always helped with rodeo, assisting in concessions and tickets. Along the same lines, we can’t forget the future of Redding Rodeo, the Redding Junior Rodeo Association, they are great at jumping in wherever they are needed. Lastly, Redding’s Queen Program is one of the best in the nation! These are the ladies that represent our rodeo not only in our home start, but also across the nation. Without all the groups that volunteer, Redding Rodeo would not be the community success and tradition it has become.
Every town is known for something, and it just so happens that the town of Redding, CA, and Redding Rodeo have several hometown celebrities they get to be proud of. We are excited to highlight a few celebrities below that represent Redding’s roots and show the culture of community and gratitude that Redding Rodeo stands for.
Jordan was born and raised in northern California, still calls Redding home, but also has an address in Redmond, Oregon. This bull rider has always ridden horses, but also loves to hunt, fish, and do pretty much anything outdoors. He is a fourth-generation cowboy, and the third to compete in rodeos. As far as rodeo goes, he has been the most successful in bull riding but also enjoys team and tie-down roping. In fact, he enters those events at rodeos in the Columbia River Circuit any chance he gets.
Having grown up in Northern California, horses have always been a constant in Nellie Miller’s life. Her love for rodeo and horses led to a college career that started at Chico State and the University of Nevada-Las Vegas, home of the Thomas and Mack Center where the NFR is held. She had three major career highlights during the 2019 season, on top of several other rodeos, she won RodeoHouston for the second consecutive time, she tied for the title at Wyoming’s Cheyenne Frontier Days Rodeo giving her back-to-back titles there as well. She also won the barrel racing and the all-around championship at the Red Bluff (Calif.) Round-Up last April. She is the first woman in the history of the 98-year-old event to earn the all-around and it is because the rodeo committee added breakaway roping. She earned more money in those two events than any other competitor and made history. On top of it all, she is a mom and a wife and loves supporting the sport of rodeo in any way she can. Can’t wait to see at this year’s rodeo!
We may have saved the most memorable for last because this is a household name in the rodeo industry, the one and only, Lane Frost. It’s tough to write about somebody that you feel like you should know but only know him because of the legacy he left behind. This is exactly what the Redding Rodeo stands for; Celebrating legacy and long-standing traditions. The rides that Lane had at Redding Rodeo will forever go down in rodeo history.
