Written by

The 74th Redding Rodeo is right around the corner, taking place May 18-21, 2022 in Redding, California. Cowboy Lifestyle Network is proud to be partnering up with one of the best rodeos in the great state of California. It is going to be a jam-packed week of fun and rodeo. Check out the full schedule of events below and make sure to purchase your tickets ahead of time at the link below before they sell out!

About Redding Rodeo

Back in 1943, Redding Rodeo was a small, one-day event started by a young man who went by Sheriff John Balma. At the first rodeo in 1943, the purse was $175 plus all entry fees! The Saturday night dance back then was held starting at “9 til milking time!”. It wasn’t until 1948 that the event moved to Redding and entered into a 99-year lease with the City of Redding for their event. In the 1980s, the Redding Rodeo Association was born when the Sheriff’s Posse remained under the mandate of the sheriff’s office, the infamous Redding red shirts were born.

Another big partner of the rodeo is the Asphalt Cowboys, founded by local businessmen in 1954. Their annual BBQ is held in September and has one of the BIGGEST pancake breakfasts in the nation on the Friday morning of the rodeo to help many folks in our community. One more thing to look out for this year is the Annual Redding Rodeo Parade, held on the Saturday of the rodeo, it will be fun for the whole family!

Of course, what would be the rodeo without all the affiliate rodeo clubs? The Redding Rodeo Association Auxiliary has been the steadfast helpers of the rodeo since its inception. The Redding Women’s Rodeo Association (Originally the Posse-ettes) have always helped with rodeo, assisting in concessions and tickets. We can’t forget the future of Redding Rodeo, the Redding Junior Rodeo Association, they are great at jumping in wherever they are needed. Lastly, Redding’s Queen Program is one of the best in the nation! These are the ladies that represent Redding Rodeo across the nation, not only attending their hometown event but traveling to rodeos all over the country! Without all the groups that volunteer, Redding Rodeo would not be the community success and tradition it has become.

Asphalt Cowboys Pancake Breakfast | May 20, 2022 | 5:00 – 10:00 AM | Downtown Redding

The pancake breakfast started in 1954, as one of the Rodeo Week activities. The first breakfast served about 700 people. By the late 1950s, the breakfast had grown to over 1000 participants. The Cowboys used equipment borrowed from many different sources, including the Sheriff’s Department, local churches, and some Redding residents. Breakfast goers often ate their pancakes and sausage on tables made from doors and sawhorses “borrowed” from area lumber yards.

As the years went by the Cowboys found it necessary to acquire more and more of their own equipment as the breakfast had outgrown the reserve of donated equipment. Starting with tables, the Cowboys began a program of buying or building equipment. The Cowboys were able to purchase old Mcdonald’s grills, as they were phased out of restaurants throughout northern California. These griddles and many chairs and tables later, the undisputed largest outdoor community breakfast in the United States has grown to over 10,000 of our best friends sharing breakfast together rain or shine!!!

Redding Rodeo Parade | May 21, 2022 | 10:00 AM

This parade was first staged in 1949 as the “Shasta County Sheriff’s Posse Rodeo Parade.” The parade organization and operation were turned over to the Asphalt Cowboys in 1958 so that the Sheriff’s Posse could concentrate on the rodeo and refurbishing the rodeo grounds. The parade began life with almost 200 entries. Over the years the parade has grown to as high as 250 entries, coming from all over the north state. The original parade had 32 categories.Today’s entrants compete in 52 different classes with prize and trophy awards. Rodeo parades, a regular feature of western rodeos, showcased many of the professional cowboys that would ride in the rodeo plus the typical mix of marching bands, floats, and majorettes. The first Redding Rodeo Parade upheld these traditions, including having a western rodeo, movie, or other star as the parade Grand Marshal.Today the parade tradition continues. Many entrants are made up of mostly non-professional local riders and the Grand Marshall is an honor conferred on a local citizen or citizens.
