From its humble beginnings in 1933, it has grown each and every year into one of the best weekends of western entertainment anywhere in the nation. This year’s event, scheduled for August 10-13, will undoubtedly be one of the best ever. Similar to just as it was way back in 1935, the Suicide Race is a highlight that fans of the Omak Stampede simply don’t want to miss. Run on a “no holds barred” course, competitors ride their horses 225 feet down a bluff to the Okanogan River, then swim or wade across and then make a mad dash of 500 yards to the finish line, which is in the center of the Stampede arena. Needless to say, this is one event that definitely gets the fan’s juices flowing.
