Special Olympics Arizona offers recreational and competitive sports opportunities for individuals with intellectual disabilities. Several Ak-Chin Indian Community members have family members or friends with intellectual disabilities, and they honor these individuals each year by participating in the tournament.
The Ak-Chin Indian Community Police Department hosts this event annually to raise awareness and funds for Special Olympics Arizona. A few days later, on Thursday, May 2, the department will participate in the Arizona Law Enforcement Torch Run for Special Olympics. Walkers, bikers, and runners from the community can also participate. After a safety briefing at 5:45 a.m., transportation leaves at 6 a.m. to arrive at the starting point for this leg of the journey. The police department receives the torch from the Maricopa Police Department at Murphy Road and Maricopa-Casa Grande Highway for the second portion of the run to the Frito Lay plant, before passing it on to another agency.
Be a part of something special—register today for the bowling tournament, and don’t miss the chance to participate in or view the inspiring Torch Run! It’s all good times for a great cause!
