Alberta cowgirl crowned Miss Rodeo Canada 2015

Written by

On November 7, 2014, Miss Ponoka Stampede, Katy Lucas, was crowned Miss Rodeo Canada 2015 at the conclusion of the pageant during the Canadian National Finals Rodeo. On www.missrodeocanda.com she wrote, “My first stop as Miss Rodeo Canada will be in the bright lights of Las Vegas for the National Finals Rodeo. I cannot wait for this journey to officially begin, although in my mind it began 18 years ago when I nervously met one of my greatest heroes… a rodeo queen.”

Lucas told Cowboy Lifestyle Network she met Miss Rodeo America 1995 Jennifer (Douglas) Smith at the Geisler Ranch and Livestock Center in Idaho Falls when she was just three-years-old.   As a young child she was so shy that her mother, Sharon, and Miss Rodeo Idaho 1995 posed in a group photograph with her and Jennifer.

“I am really excited to meet both the current and new Miss Rodeo America while I’m in Vegas. I met Miss Rodeo America 1995 (Jennifer Smith) when I was three, it was actually the first autograph I ever got from a rodeo queen and what inspired me to become a rodeo queen myself. I’ve met a few Miss Rodeo America’s since then but I’ll be really excited to meet the next one because I’ll be doing events alongside her all year long,” expressed Lucas.

As a titleholder one of the duties is designing custom chaps to be worn during her reign. Lucas mentioned she is working with a couple chap designers. “Kenton from Oceanfront Saddlery is creating our “classic” Miss Rodeo Canada chaps that have black bodies with red and gold trim. Kenton also created our beautiful Tough Enough to Wear Pink Chaps, inside the chaps is a note from each Miss Rodeo Canada with encouraging words for future queens. Both of those pairs of chaps will now be passed down each year.”

She is also designing a new pair of chaps with Outta Line Leather Design this year. “Tyrone let me run wild with the design for these! They are currently being crafted and will feature all things Canada from our Rocky Mountains, Royal Canadian Mounted Police to Canada’s official animals like the beaver and caribou in tooled leather down the side. Tyrone does some really wild work so I am really excited to see how they look when I ride in the Thomas and Mack during NFR,” expressed Lucas.

Cowboy Lifestyle Network asked Lucas if there was someone in particular she was looking forward to meeting at the Wrangler NFR. She told us, “The National Finals is held so highly in my mind that I just can’t wait to be in the presence of all the contestants that are talented enough to qualify. My dad was a six-time Nationals Finals Rodeo qualifier in the tie-down roping so just to be around that quality of competitors, knowing that my dad used to belong to that group will be surreal to me. Canada also has three qualifiers this year that I know quite well, Jake Vold in the Bareback, Curtis Cassidy in the Steer Wrestling, and Dustin Flundra in the Saddle Bronc, so I am very excited to be there cheering them on too.

Her father qualified for the NFR in 1983, 1985, 1987, 1988, 1990 and 1991.
Miss Rodeo Canada contestants compete in several categories similar to the Miss Rodeo America pageant. Lucas won horsemanship and also the new category the People’s Choice. “While I was very proud of winning the Horsemanship category, being a born and raised cowgirl, I am quite proud to have been voted to win the People’s Choice Award. This category was brand new to Miss Rodeo Canada this year and while it did not count towards winning MRC, I was proud that I was doing something that made a large audience take notice,” she stated.
