For Almost 80 Years, Saba’s Company Grows, Changes With The Times

Written by

Saba’s Western Stores have a long history here in the Valley. Today, Saba’s operates six stores in the Phoenix area, with locations in Avondale, Cave Creek, Mesa and Scottsdale. Stores offer a full selection of western apparel, including cowboy boots, hats, shirts, jeans and accessories. Saba’s also sells boots online at www.sabas.com. The website offers an expanded selection of boot styles and sizes beyond what’s available from individual stores. About 10 percent of the company’s current boot sales come from the website, according to company executive Roger Saba.
The Saba’s website is currently undergoing renovation to offer a complete online storefront. Once finished, the site will offer expanded selection including everything carried in the retail stores too, Saba notes.
While creating and expanding an online presence doesn’t sound unusual for any company these days, it probably would have been beyond the wildest dreams of company founder David Saba, Sr. In 1913, Saba moved to the United States from Lebanon with no money and no knowledge of English.
After spending time in California and connected to different business opportunities, David Saba moved to Arizona and opened the first Saba’s store in Chandler in 1927. After World War II, people began to discover the suburbs, and the Saba company did too. In 1947, Saba’s opened its second location at Brown and Main streets, now known as Old Town Scottsdale. There were no banks in Scottsdale at the time, so the family needed to drive over to Mesa to make deposits. The Saba family continued to open stores in locations where they saw customer interest. Today, Saba’s stores are still owned and operated by descendents of the original founder.
If you’re in the market for Western duds, check out a Saba’s store near you, and before too long you’ll also be able to shop their vast selection online!
