From January 26 through February 3, Rapid City, South Dakota will transform into an environment of cowboys, horses, livestock, live music, shopping, great food, and more at the Black Hills Stock Show & Rodeo (BHSS). The mission of BHSS is to preserve Western heritage in South Dakota and incorporate rural lifestyles into the urban community of Rapid City.
The event is produced by Central States Fair, Inc.; and as of 2024, it is a 66-year-long tradition. The tradition has grown to include cattle sales for 10 different breeds, a two-day horse sale, the Hutchison Western Stallion Row, more than 300 vendors and seminars to encourage and educate livestock producers, horse enthusiasts and Rapid City residents. But these aren’t the only things on the agenda for the estimated 331,000 people that attend. There will be rodeo action, livestock and horse shows, the CINCH Trade Show, concerts and various activities.
What began as an idea amongst Rapid City Chamber Ag Committee members in a laundromat turned into reality in 1959, when the first Black Hills Winter Show took place. At this show, only three breeds of cattle were shown: Angus, Hereford, and Shorthorn. Other breeds were introduced to the show throughout the 60s. In 1966, the Central States Fair took over, and the name was changed to Black Hills Stock Show.
The Central States Fair contracted with Sutton Rodeo in 1978, and the first rodeo, called the Winter Rodeo, was produced at the Civic Center. Two years later, the Black Hills Stock Show moved from the Central States Fairgrounds to the Rushmore Plaza Civic Center. Today, the nine-day event takes place back at the Central States Fairgrounds and The Monument.
