For the San Antonio Stock Show Rodeo
SAN ANTONIO, Texas (Feb. 18, 2015) — The third bracket of competition came to a close at the San Antonio Stock Show Rodeo on Thursday with three reigning champions earning a spot in the semifinals.
Wyatt Smith, who won last year’s steer wrestling championship, secured a spot by winning the first round and placing in the second. The Rexburg, Idaho resident tied for second place in the money standings.
The pressure was on two other champions, bull rider Sage Kimzey and tie-down roper Jesse Clark. Both had earned some money in the first two rounds but needed to add to that in order to advance.
Clark, from Portales, N.M., had the fastest tie-down roping run of the night, stopping the clock in 7.4 seconds, and earning $2,281. He finished second in the money earnings with $2,851 behind Cimarron Boardman from Stephenville who has $3,422.
In one respect Kimzey has been the most successful bull rider in the third bracket because he was the only one to ride all three bulls. However, his scores put him in the lower ranges of the pay scale. He finished third here Thursday with a 79-point ride. That added $1,141 to his earnings giving him a total of $2,281 which tied for third and fourth place, enough to get him to the semifinals.
Kimzey took the bull riding world by storm here last year winning the rodeo and the Xtreme Bulls. That was worth over $40,000 and put him on pace to win his first world title. He will be back at the semifinals ready hoping to add to his earnings and have the opportunity for two more championships here on Feb. 28.
The big money winner in bracket three was once again a barrel racer. Four-time world champion Sherry Cervi is known for her great horsemanship and showed that to fans here. She won two rounds and placed second in another earning $6,273. Cervi won this rodeo in 2003 the first year it was held in the AT&T Center.
New contestants are making their way here to compete in bracket four. The first round of competition will be Friday night beginning at 7:30 p.m.
