Calgary Stampede 2016

Written by

The Calgary Stampede is a not-for-profit event that occurs every year around July. In 2016, the event will happen July 8th through July 17th. All profits from the event are reinvested back into the Stampede programs as well as providing care for the facilities. The Stampede for cowboy and cowgirl lovers takes place in Stampede Park located slightly southeast of Calgary in Alberta, Canada.

Brief History of the Event

The Calgary Stampede has been called the Greatest Outdoor Show on Earth. The rodeo event has been around for over 100 years. In 2012, the Next Generation committee took submissions to be entered into a time capsule to be opened in another 100 years. In 2015, there were over 250,000 visitors watching the parade before the Stampede itself. Over the course of the event last year, there were over 1.4 million visitors.

What Makes this Rodeo Special?

Aside from the fact that the rodeo has been around for over 100 years, there are various events that help keep the cowboy and cowgirl life alive. There are concerts with big name artists like Lady Antebellum and the Zac Brown Band, who are both performing at the 2016 Calgary Stampede in Canada.

Along with great music from musical artists like Lady Antebellum, visitors will be able to see a comedy show from Jeff Dunham. There are events for children as well like the Calgary Stampede’s Mini Donkey Showcase. The food is something that visitors come from all over to sample. There’ll be four new Oreo items on the midway for Stampede lovers to try.

Throughout the day and night, there are plenty of rides to thrill the entire family. At 7:45 p. m. each night, a klaxon blast announces the GMC Rangeland Derby with nine heats featuring four chuckwagons in each heat. After the races, there’s entertainment, which concludes with fireworks.

Media Coverage of the Events

There will be plenty of media coverage at the event from the Cowboy Lifestyle Network, Ak-Chin Indian Community and Earnhardt Auto Centers Road Team as well as other local television and news channels. CBC will have streaming coverage of most of the events available at the Stampede.

What Events Offer Competition for Cowboys and Cowgirls?

Whether you’re a competitor or a visitor to the Calgary Stampede in Canada, you can enjoy thrilling competitions like Barrel Racing, Steer Wrestling, Novice Bareback, Junior Steer Riding and Bull Riding. There are nine events in total for competitors. There are over two million in prizes to be awarded at these events, which are planned for every day of the Stampede at 1:15 p.m.
