The Taylor Rodeo proudly calls Williamson County, Texas home year after year, but it isn’t only this crowd favorite rodeo that has left it’s mark on central Texas. The hometown of legendary cowboy “William Bill Pickett,” Willianson County and the Taylor Rodeo Association are proud to carry on his cowboy legacy.
Before rodeo was a sport and cowboy was a brand, Bill Pickett was already making history in the dirt. Born in 1870 in Texas, this trailblazing cowboy invented bulldogging, what we now call steer wrestling, by leaping from his horse and wrestling steers to the ground with grit and guts. He toured with the 101 Ranch Wild West Show, shared the stage with legends like Buffalo Bill, and even starred in silent films. Pickett didn’t just ride into the arena, he carved a legacy into it, one hoofbeat at a time. That legacy was formally honored when he became the first African American cowboy inducted into the National Rodeo Hall of Fame in 1972, followed by his induction into the ProRodeo Hall of Fame in 1989
