I’ve been blessed with the opportunity to meet and interact with some absolutely amazing people in my life, rarely do I find myself star struck. Setting up for our interview on the “Outlaws and Renegades” tour was just like any other, no nerves at all. That all changed the second Charlie Daniels walked in the trailer. Here I am standing face to face, with one of the living legends of country music, and one of the great patriots of his generation.
To sort through all of his accomplishments is a full day’s work. Charlie has sold millions of albums, is a beloved member of the Grand Ole Opry and Country Music Hall of Fame, was presented the Pioneer Award from the ACM, and appeared in the classic film Urban Cowboy. Just to name a few.
To build that type of career, while doing what you love for 62 years, is an incredible accomplishment. To do it on your terms, is a different story. Anyone familiar with Charlie’s music, political commentary, or who’s read his book, can tell you. Charlie has never been one to shy away from controversial subjects, or stand up for what he believes in. You’d be hard pressed to find a man that’s more charitable, cares more about our veterans, or loves The United States of America, more than Charlie Daniels.
Interestingly enough, in the time we spent chatting, the vast majority of conversation wasn’t about himself or his accomplishments. His love of college football (particularly his Tennessee Volunteers), team roping, American history, and his dear friend Chris LeDoux, dominated the conversation.
Blending those characteristics with his kind, soft, and genuine soul. In my eyes, result in the perfect embodiment of what being a “Cowboy” is all about.
After chatting I had the pleasure of watching Charlie rock Grand Junction, Colorado. Even at 82 years old it is obvious the man still loves performing. That said, if given the opportunity to catch this living legends show. Do it.
