An off-season event produced by the San Angelo Stock Show & Rodeo, which hosts their annual rodeo and livestock shows in the spring each year, the 2022 CINCH Roping Fiesta will kick off Thursday, October 27, and run through Sunday, October 30.
In 1954, the San Angelo Stock Show and Rodeo Association initiated the annual event to earn revenue during the fall when the grounds are not being used for their annual shows and rodeo. While the event has always spanned at least two days and brought together talented cowboys and cowgirls, featured events have varied throughout the years whether it be tie-down roping, steer roping, team roping, steer wrestling, double mugging or breakaway roping.
Steer roping and calf roping have remained the most prominent events throughout the years. In 1962, tie-down roping became one of those two staples when the committee added a match roping to the Fiesta. The first three matches were between Dean Oliver and Jim Bob Altizer, with Oliver taking the very first win.
Roping enthusiasts unite in San Angelo every fall, and it’s become a homecoming of sorts for Texas ropers. Many world champions and exceptional cowboys have competed in the CINCH Roping Fiesta, and that tradition continues still today.
This year’s CINCH Roping Fiesta will stay true to its roots and host many of the top ropers in the world, including the match roping between Caleb Smidt and Tuf Cooper. It will be a 4-day long event beginning with the Lip Chip LLC Ladies’ Breakaway Roping on Thursday at 10:00 a.m., which has $50,000 in prize money and bonuses.
Friday will feature the Preliminary Tie-Down Roping at 10:00 a.m., in which the top ropers will advance to compete on Saturday at 1:00 p.m. The match roping will follow the tie-down action Saturday afternoon; and to end the night, there will be live music by William Beckman and Cameron Wrinkle. Saturday’s activities will also include opportunities to shop with the Rope Yourself a Painting event and a vendor expo.
The vendor expo will continue Sunday, and a church service with donuts and coffee will kick off the final day of the Fiesta. At noon on Sunday, the steer roping and double-mugging will wrap up the weekend! Throughout the weekend, there will also be multiple World Jr. Calf Roping Championship events. The complete schedule is as follows.
