The Cowboy Lifestyle Network had the privilege to be apart of the 2012 Bucking Bull Futurity, located at Westworld in Scottsdale, Arizona. But you may ask what exactly is a bull futurity competition? A bull futurity is a considered a competition between two to four year old bulls; meanwhile, many people in the industry participate by paying an entry fee in order to own a bucking bull before they bid for the bull.
Remote Control Bucking Dummy
Indeed, the main purpose of buying a bucking bull is to place first and win the prize money if their bull impresses the judges and ranks with the highest score ranges. Typically, these yearlings buck anywhere from four to six seconds while having a dummy strapped on their back. As discussed by Cody Hancock, the device weighs around 25 pounds and the dummy is released by a remote after the buzzer sounds. Every bucking bull is judged the same way based on five categories: Buck, Degree of Difficulty, Intensity, kick, and spin.
This is an arena where young bulls become big bulls by achieving their “bullhood.” Classic futurity bull training is all about providing these bulls with the best possible training to enhance the bulls overall conditioning, confidence, and also to make sure his skill level is up to par so that when he bucks, he does it with a consistent pattern. Once these bulls mature and meet the professional standards as top ranked bulls, they then become a selling point for the PBR and PRCA.
Crystal Rae Coddington & Dan Fowlie
Scottsdale Event Coordinator, Jake Jacobson, was the rodeo announcer at this years bucking bull futurity. However, He was not the only rodeo announcer that was present during this remarkable day filled with bucking bull action. In fact, rodeo announcer, Dan Fowlie, graced the audience with his presence and gave his insight on the upcoming year of bull riding during an exclusive CLN interview with Crystal Rae Coddington. In this video, she also interviews Cody Hancock as he informs CLN the purpose of the bull futurity. Dan Fowlie has such a great reputation in the industry and will be at this years PRCA Convention in Las Vegas, Nevada, as he will be sharing a booth with rodeo bullfighter, Luke Kraut.
What makes this event so special is that it is much different than any other ordinary bull riding event. In other words, you get to watch these young bulls try to make a name for themselves, as every young bull has to start somewhere. Two-year-old bulls are strapped with dummies on their backs while three-year-old and four-year-old bulls get the opportunity to buck of riders.
