Western Swing & Waltzes and Other Punchy Songs, the latest album from country artist Colter Wall, “is dedicated to people that put food on tables across the world.” The voice of the twenty-five year old singer-songwriter from Swift Current, Saskatchewan will take you straight to the ranch where you can almost see cowboys rustling cattle and riding bucking broncos as you listen.
Recently acquiring his own herd of Red Angus in Saskatchewan, where he lives, Colter not only writes about being a cowboy but truly lives the lifestyle. This summer, he’s been working as a ranch hand in Texas with English Domestics—Hereford/Angus crossbred. Getting his hands dirty and working the land and livestock has given Wall a unique perspective on the “Western” lifestyle which bleeds into his lyrics.
Premiering his latest release from the new record, Big Iron, Wall sings of an outlaw blowing into town, painting a picture that begs a big screen cameo from John Wayne himself. Inspired by country legends such as Waylon Jennings and George Jones, Wall brings us back to the roots of country-western music with storytelling, folk, and traditional nuances. In an interview with Pitchfork, “Wall said recently that he appreciates atmospheric touches on songs.” In his previous records, you can hear sounds of a campfire on an open plain and what resembles the haunting howls of coyotes.
Since the age of twenty-two when he released his first album, Colter has been praised by notable publications such as The New Yorker, Vice, Rolling Stone, and more. All, including this author, stating that there’s no voice quite like Colter Wall’s out there. If you’re looking to be swept away from the craziness going on in the world right now and into simpler times when hard work and dirty boots were what put food on the table, then be on the lookout for more new music being released from Western Swing & Waltzes and Other Punchy Songs.
