For the San Antonio Stock Show Rodeo
SAN ANTONIO, Texas (Feb. 28, 2015) — Champions were crowned at the 2015 San Antonio Stock Show Rodeo in the AT&T Center on Saturday night with each event winner taking home over $20,000 in cash. Additionally, each champion got a trophy buckle and a $5,000 gas card.
The big money winner was Cory Solomon from Prairie View, Texas who earned $23,458 in tie-down roping. Solomon came into the final round in third place in the standings with $8,982. He roped and tied his calf in 7.0 seconds adding $14,476 to that.
“I’ve had the best winter I’ve ever had in my career,” Solomon said. “I’m feeling very blessed. This is a rodeo that everybody wants to win. To get one of these buckles is really special.”
Solomon was one of three contestants who earned over $23,000. Four-time world champion Kaycee Field, from Spanish Fork, Utah, won $23,315 in the bareback riding. Wyoming’s Seth Brockman earned $23,173 in steer wrestling.
Two-time world champion saddle bronc rider Cody Wright tied for the championship here in 2007. He is on the injured reserve list now and was at home in Milford, Utah, watching the rodeo stream live on the Wrangler Network where he got to see his oldest son Rusty take the victory lap.
Rusty Wright earned the saddle bronc riding championship here after scoring 87 points on C5 Rodeo’s horse Rockstar. That 87-point effort was worth $14,476 and gave him a total of $22,246. Last year, Rusty didn’t qualify for this rodeo so was here as a spectator with his father.
“I tried really hard to treat this like it was just a $1,000 rodeo,” Rusty said. “I’m not going to lie, I was nervous.” The 19-year-old conquered those nerves and is on a mission to qualify for his first Wrangler National Finals Rodeo. Prior to San Antonio, he was 10th in the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association (PRCA) world standings with $8,560 in earnings so far this year. The San Antonio win saw him beating his uncles Jake Wright and the reigning world champion Spencer Wright.
In the bull riding it was Sage Kimzey that had the high-marked ride of the night. Kimzey, from Strong City, Okla., is last year’s champion here and the reigning world champion. He rode D&H Cattle Company’s bull named Savage for 90 points and $14,476.
However, it was Chandler Bownds from Lubbock, Texas, who won the rodeo. Bownds finished second in the finals with an 88 earnings $10,857. Championships here are based on total money and this was one of the closest races of the night. Bownds had $21,692, just $124 more than Kimzey to earn the title.
There were three barrel racers who collected more than $20,000. At the top of the list was champion Sherry Cervi who won this rodeo in 2006. The Marana, Ariz., resident rode a borrowed horse to $21,941. She was followed by Alexa Lake from Richmond, Texas, who won $21,604 and Sarah Rose McDonald from Brunswick, Ga., who left here with $20,499.
Team roper Kaleb Driggers won his second San Antonio title heading for Travis Woodard who won his first in the heeling. They stopped the clock in 3.9 seconds, just one-tenth of a second off of the arena record that Driggers set with Jade Corkill in 2012. Driggers, from Albany, Ga., and Woodard from Stockton, Calif., each got checks for $21,034.
For the past 10 years, the San Antonio Stock Show Rodeo has been named the PRCA Large Indoor Rodeo of the Year. The rodeo is the richest regular season rodeo and one of the most prestigious titles a contestant can earn. Dates for the 2016 rodeo are Feb. 11 – 28.
