[vc_row][vc_column][vc_single_image image=”35038″ img_size=”full” >Warm temperatures and dry conditions in the West create prime conditions for wildfires, and this summer is no exception. Wildland firefighters have been risking their lives to battle fires and keep their communities safe. The Coors Banquet Protect Our West (POW) campaign supports wildland firefighting teams by donating a portion from the sale of each case or case equivalent of beer — draft, bottles or cans. These funds go to the Wildland Firefighter Foundation, a group that helps injured or fallen firefighters and their families.
The Wildland Firefighter Foundation’s mission is “To honor, recognize, and support wildland firefighters, past, present and future, and to provide resources to assist fallen and injured firefighters and their families.” Based in Boise, Idaho, the Foundation provides aid to firefighters injured while battling grass or forest fires throughout the West, and to families of deceased firefighters.
Support could include assistance with travel costs to bring family members to the bedside of an injured firefighter, or help with replacing lost wages during a firefighter’s medical leave.
The Foundation’s Family Fire Weekend happens each May. This event brings together parents, grandparents, husbands, wives, children, extended family members, friends, colleagues and agencies to honor wildland firefighters who have died. The weekend also supports injured firefighters and the family members of injured or fallen firefighters.
This event continues to grow each year due partly to the unfortunate fatalities of each year. There are also many family members and friends who return annually to share this time with old friends, meet new friends, and welcome those who have lost wildland firefighters from their own families. The understanding from others in similar situations provides great empathy to adults and kids. Kids get to make memory books and scrapbooks about their fallen family member, and a memorial event is held during the weekend to honor deceased firefighters.
Visit the Wildland Firefighter Association website for more information about this group.
