for the Fort Worth Stock Show & Rodeo
FORT WORTH, Texas (Feb. 6, 2015) – The Fort Worth Stock Show & Rodeo still has one day of competition left, but a few contestants have already added to their checking accounts.
The first round has now been completed in all events; steer wrestlers and tie-down ropers all had their first run in pre-rodeo competition. The best barrel racers in the first round were determined on Tuesday.
Friday saw the first round conclude in bareback riding, team roping, saddle bronc riding and bull riding. The big winner in bareback riding so far is two-time Wrangler National Finals Rodeo qualifier Jared Smith from Eastland, Texas.
Smith had his first ride here on Friday afternoon and scored 85 points on Four Star Rodeo’s Rusty Slim. That earned him a much needed $3,163. Originally from Florida, Smith has been plagued with injuries including herniated discs in his neck and back, a dislocated clavicle and he just had surgery on his knee last September.
Smith rode his second horse on Friday night scoring 77 points. He will have his third-round horse at the Saturday matinee and hope to move into the top 12 who qualify for Saturday night’s championships.
In the team roping, Oklahomans have been the first to cash in here. Jesse Stipes from Salina and Billie Jack Saebens from Nowata were 4.8 seconds to win $4,711 each. They were 6.9 seconds on their second run on Friday afternoon and moved to fourth place in the overall standings with a total time of 11.7.
Reigning world champion saddle bronc rider Spencer Wright was 86 points on Dakota Rodeo’s Calamity Jane to win the first round and earn $4,551. Wright, from Milford, Utah, is 161 points on two and will be competing for his first Fort Worth Stock Show & Rodeo championship Saturday night.
There were a pack of bull riders in the top spot of the first round, Casey Bowman from Lamesa, Texas was one of those. He rode on Friday night and scored 84 points on Rafter G Rodeo’s Inspector Gadget. He tied with Ardie Maier from Timber Lake, S.D., and Casey Huckabee from Grand Saline, Texas. They each earned $3,953.
Bowman and three others who got scores Friday night will ride here again on Saturday afternoon. There are nine men who have ridden two bulls, so to qualify for Saturday night’s championship round, they need points from the second round as well.
Competition at the World’s Original Indoor Rodeo® continues on Saturday, Feb. 7 with a performance at 2 and the championship round at 7:30 p.m.
