Astounding artist, Cruz Contreras (of The Black Lillies) recently released his debut solo album, Cosmico. For the past twenty-five years, Contreras has toured with renowned bands such as Robinella and the CCstringband (1998-2007) and The Black Lillies (2009-2019). While on the road with each band, Cruz had incredible opportunities to perform on Late Night with Conan O’Brien, CMA Fest, Bonnaroo, and most impressively, on the exclusive stage at the Grand Ole Opry over forty times, among gracing many other stages.
Cruz has brought in some heavy hitters to assist with the creation of Cosmico. “I had the pleasure of working with my good friends who also happen to be some of the best in their fields. Cosmico is produced by Ethan Ballinger (Miranda Lambert, Lee Ann Womack) and Megan McCormick (Jenny Lewis, Allison Russell, Amythyst Kiah), and engineered by Craig Alvin (Kasey Musgraves) as well as a few songs are co-written by these incredibly talented people.” Cosmico is a sonic journey of epic proportions.
Pulling inspiration from multiple genres of music, Cruz crosses lines to create something truly unique. “When you mix “psychedelic rock and country” you get this,” he notes. Lyrically full of personal experiences and hope for the future, Contreras opens up his life to fans. The nine song album will bring listeners on a wild ride through the multi-genre sound.
Recently coming off a multi-day tour across the country leading up to the album release, Cruz says he’s happy to be home, but has no plans of stopping the show any time soon. “Community is a big part of my network and what I love doing. I truly enjoy playing the small venue (in addition to larger ones of course), but you get to have that intimate experience with your fans and people new to your music in a special way,” Cruz says.
