Dodge City Roundup Rodeo 2018

Written by

From July 31 through August 5, the Cowboy Capital of the World hosts the 42nd annual Dodge City Roundup at the Dodge City Rodeo Grounds. The Xtreme Bulls and other PRCA events take place during the last five days of the 10-day Dodge City Days festival. Thousands arrive each year to witness as cowboys and cowgirls from around the world compete for money and prizes during the scheduled action-packed events.
Dodge City Roundup Rodeo History
The “Greatest Show on Dirt” began in 1977 in order to commemorate Western Heritage by hosting horse shows, roping contests and other events. From the rodeo’s inception, the event was created to be spectacular with the offer of winning large cash prizes while competing on some of the most challenging livestock in the country. The first competition included 175 contestants vying for $8,200 in prize money. In 2012, the popular Kansas event was included into the PRCA Pro Rodeo Hall of Fame. Two years later, the rodeo was expanded to five nights of thrilling action to include a night devoted to the Xtreme Bulls competition. In all, 800 Western athletes took part in the Dodge City Roundup and the prize money was nearly $324,000.
Dodge City Roundup Events
The excitement begins on July 31 when spectators cheer for the cowboys competing during the exhilarating Extreme Bulls event. The top bull riders in the country meet some of the toughest bulls around in hopes of completing the eight-second ride, gain the points and go on to the finals in Las Vegas. Along with the array of traditional PRCA events, audiences cheer for the youngest of competitors during the mutton bustin’ contest. The Dodge City Roundup also plays host to the longest-running Little Britches Rodeo.
Between competitors, freestyle and protection bullfighting rodeo clowns Andy Burelle and Cody Sosebee entertain the crowds while keeping the cowboys safe. Trick rider Kyzer Stoddard also comes back to mesmerize the audience with his unique feats.
