CODY, Wyo.; July 2, 2015 — Cody Teel has been one of the most consistent bull riders in the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association, qualifying for the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo the past three years.
Β The Kountze, Texas resident wants to be in Las Vegas again this December to compete and have a chance at a second world championship. He won his first in 2012. He helped his quest significantly at the second performance of the Buffalo Bill Cody Stampede on Thursday night.
Β Teel got on the bull named Blue Marlin owned by Canadaβs C5 Rodeo Company and scored 83 points. This put him in the lead here and he became one of only two bull riders to be successful. The second one was Chad German from Groesbeck, Texas, who had a 77-point ride. Both of these men are also former college champions. German earned that title in Casper, Wyo., in 2009 and Teel earned his in 2011.
Β There are still two rodeo performances left, so there is a possibility that Teel wonβt hang on to his lead here. However, with the success of the bulls versus bull riders, he is very likely to get a check. He is currently 11th in the world standings. The top 15 in the standings the end of September will qualify for the NFR and every dollar earned is important to all of the contestants hoping to get to Las Vegas.
Β World champion tie-down roper Monty Lewis moved into second place in his event with an 8.3 second run at Stampede Park Thursday night. Lewis, from Hereford, Texas, won the gold buckle in 2004 and has been to the NFR an additional four times, the last in 2012.
Β He is currently fifth in the world standings. The Cody Stampede is known for being one of the richest one-head rodeos on the circuit and is the highest paying over the Fourth-of-July. Because of the busy schedule, contestants have opportunities to get to more rodeos if they only compete in one round.
Β βThis is a great rodeo,β Lewis said. βAt other times of the year, we love having more than one opportunity to compete in one place. But this lets us get to more rodeos and doesnβt spread the money out as much. It works out really good when you get a check.β
Β The third performance of the 96th annual Buffalo Bill Cody Stampede gets underway at 8 p.m. on Friday.
