The rough and tumble town of Payson, Arizona, welcomes back the 34th Annual Gary Hardt Memorial Pro Rodeo, set to bring together some of the best rodeo performers in the country. Held in Payson, Arizona, from May 18-20, 2023, the event is a fitting tribute to the late Gary Hardt, a beloved figure in the rodeo world who was a champion roper and well-known for his bull riding skills as well as a pillar of the local community.
You don’t want to miss all the action, which includes a wide range of events, including bull riding, barrel racing, team roping, and steer wrestling. The cowboys and cowgirls who participate in these events demonstrate their incredible skill and athleticism and deep connection to the traditions of the American West.
A true highlight every year is the bull riding competition, which features some of the world’s toughest and most skilled riders. In a true crowd-pleasing event, spectators cheer as the riders take on the massive bulls, trying to stay on for the full eight seconds and earn a high score from the judges. The barrel racing competition is no less thrilling, with riders expertly guiding their horses around the barrels at breakneck speeds. Check out the Women’s Cactus Series Barrel Racing on Thursday, May 18th, at 6 pm, with gates opening at 5 pm.
The team roping and steer wrestling events are also a highlight, with the cowboys demonstrating their incredible strength and agility as they worked together to bring down the massive animals. Don’t miss the performances on Friday, May 19th, with gates opening at 5 pm and the performance starting at 7 pm. Friday is Tough Enough to Wear Pink night, so don’t forget to rock your pink shirts in support of breast cancer awareness. Saturday, May 20th brings the final day of the rodeo but just as much action. This is the Special Patriot Performance, so wear your red, white, and blue and pay tribute to those who serve. Active military get in free!
In addition to the rodeo events, the Gary Hardt Memorial Pro Rodeo features a range of other activities, including live music, food vendors, and a carnival. Don’t miss the mutton bustin’ for a chance to get the kids involved. Families and individuals of all ages enjoy the festivities, soaking up the sunshine and the spirit of the West.
