Held at the Cow Palace, it is hosted by Flying U Rodeo and begins each evening at 7:30 PM. General admission runs between $12.00 and $42.00.
Events
Ticket-holders will enjoy Bull Riding, Steer Wrestling, Team Roping, Bareback Bronc Riding,Saddle Bronc Riding, an Open Barrel Race, Junior Barrel Racing, and Cowgirl Barrel Racing. The Grand National Barrel Racing Jackpot will also take place during this Rodeo.
Sanction
The Grand National Rodeo is sanctioned by the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association (PRCA), which is the world’s oldest and largest rodeo-sanctioning body. It sanctions about 600 top-of-the-line multiple-event rodeos on the North American continent in about 38 states and three or four Canadian provinces.
Payouts
Included is one $6-million earner, four $3-million earners and over 100 million-dollar earners. The total payout in 2016 was $45,090,245. Looking at the possibility of such prizes makes it worthwhile for contestants to have to pay themselves to enter each rodeo. In 2016, the PRCA’s membership included 4,692 cowboys and cowgirls as well as 1,216 contract personnel who are performers and workers.
“World champion”
That is ProRodeo’s most coveted title in and is based on total earnings for the season at rodeos held across the continent. Crowned are eight world titleists at the conclusion of the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo with each receiving a trophy saddle that is specially crafted and a gold buckle.
Cow Palace
An interesting background is that the name Cow Palace comes from the fact that at the San Francisco Pan-Pacific International Exposition in 1915, the fair’s livestock exposition proved to be one of its most popular attractions, and local business leaders resolved to build a permanent structure to house animal livestock expositions. The idea lay dormant for 10 years. Then in 1925 there were 19 firms and individuals that each contributed $20,000, and in 1931 a legislative appropriation of $250,000 was passed. However, the depression of the 1930’s worsened and resistance developed to using public funds for construction of a “palace for cows.”
The arena with its permanent storm-proof pavilions and concrete and steel roof that covers nearly six acres was finally completed in 1941 through the W.P.A. Program, which put to work thousands of the unemployed. However, it continued to have a rocky road because the Federal Government rented it for $1.00 per year after Pearl Harbor was attacked. For the next five years the structure was used for troops embarking for Pacific Theater combat zones and then was converted into a large repair garage. After the war, it was again made ready to host the Grand National Livestock Expo, Rodeo, and Horse Show.
Fans
Approximately 36 million people are fans of ProRodeo. Rodeo is seventh in attendance for major sporting events, which is ahead of tennis and golf, according to the Sports Business Daily. Fans can follow professional rodeo throughout the year through television coverage, the ProRodeo.com website, and the PRCA’s ProRodeo Sports News magazine.
