EarthDayGiveawayBeing environmentally conscious is always a priority for Harrah’s Ak-Chin Casino in Maricopa and employees are especially proud to challenge the commitment during CodeGreen months in March and April. CodeGreen is a company-wide environmental initiative of Caesars Entertainment Corporation, the parent company of Harrah’s Ak-Chin Casino. Though sustainability has always been top of mind, Caesars officially adopted sustainability goals for its properties in 2007.

Earth-Day-2016These goals target carbon emissions and water consumption reduction, energy conservation, a switch to renewable energy sources and alternative fuels, and recycling. For example, last year Harrah’s Ak-Chin Casino recycled 476,841 pounds of materials and ranked second among Caesars properties for its CodeGreen efforts.

This year’s CodeGreen observations can be seen throughout Harrah’s Ak-Chin Casino. During Earth Hour on March 19, Harrah’s Ak-Chin turned off all essential interior and exterior lighting for one hour and played an Earth Hour video in hotel rooms.

Additionally, Harrah’s Ak-Chin plans to participate in Earth Day activities on Friday, April 22, along with the Ak-Chin Indian Community. Activities include a community Adopt-a-Highway cleanup, a recycle relay race, and an Earth Day Celebration Luncheon.  The luncheon will feature clothing, accessories, and artwork from recycled materials.

Harrah’s Ak-Chin Casino will also be involving guests in Earth Day events with  giveaways. During the Earth Day Giveaways at Harrah’s Ak-Chin Casino on April 22, two winners will be announced every 30 minutes to receive $250 in free slot play, and four winners will each receive $5,000 in The Home Depot gift cards to be used towards Energy Star appliances. Get free, daily entries from April 1 through April 22 by swiping in at the Promotional Kiosks. The more times you play and swipe your Total Rewards® card, the more entries you’ll receive! Visit the Total Rewards Center for details and official rules.

EarthOther CodeGreen observations last through the end of April. The casino building has been illuminated with green lighting for the entire month and has displayed a unique CodeGreen mural to raise awareness. The gift shop sells CodeGreen items and recycling bags are available in each guest room for those who wish to recycle. Harrah’s Ak-Chin Casino has also installed free electric car charging stations near the Bingo building.

We can all celebrate Earth Day and Go Green with CodeGreen at Harrah’s Ak-Chin Casino!

About the Author:

Biography:

Carolyn Sostrom is a long-time Arizona resident who loves desert sunsets, warm weather, Zumba, and the Western lifestyle.

She attended Saguaro High School in Scottsdale and then Arizona State University, earning a bachelor’s degree in journalism. Similarly to the protagonist in *The Devil Wears Prada*, Carolyn moved to New York City right after college. She started working for the fashion magazine company Conde Nast but never transitioned to the dark side. After a few years, she left New York in the rearview mirror and returned to her home state, taking a reporter job at the *Apache Junction Independent*.

With over 30 years of freelance writing experience, Carolyn especially enjoys writing about community events and profiling individuals who are making a difference in their communities. She had the pleasure of interviewing a variety of cowboy personalities for an article she wrote for the *Scottsdale Independent* about the history of DC Ranch and its roots as a working ranch. Now, her Western adventures with CLN have her diving into the rugged automotive scene, exploring the trucks and rigs cowboys rely on for work, home, and play, a niche where grit meets horsepower.

She works at Raising Special Kids, a nonprofit resource center for families of children with disabilities and special healthcare needs. Carolyn also volunteers with the Autism Society of Greater Phoenix.

Carolyn believes that everyone has a story, and she loves connecting with others to hear their stories. She’s dedicated to ethical journalism and accurate reporting, which shines through in her storytelling.
