How to Pick Your Size

Getting the right hat size is one of the most important parts of buying a cowboy hat, and it’s easier than most people think. Start by measuring around your head with a soft tape measure, placing it just above your ears and across the middle of your forehead, right where the hat will sit. Compare that measurement to the sizing chart provided by the hat brand you’re looking at, since sizes can vary slightly from one maker to another. When trying hats on, the fit should feel snug but not tight; it shouldn’t pinch, and it shouldn’t slide around when you move. If you’re between sizes, I recommend sizing up and padding your sweat band on the inside of the hat to get that perfect fit!
If you’re in the market for a custom cowboy hat, they’ll measure to fit your head exactly, even down to the exact shape of your head!

Planning Your Budget

When picking your budget for hat shopping, it’s helpful to understand the typical price ranges so you know what to expect.
Entry-level wool hats usually start around $100–$200, making them great for first-time buyers or anyone wanting a stylish look without a big investment.
Mid-range felt hats, often better quality and longer lasting, generally fall between $250–$500.
If you’re looking for something premium, however, high-end fur felt hats from top brands usually range from $600–$1,200+, depending on the quality of the felt and the details you choose. Knowing where you want to land helps narrow your options and makes the hat-shopping experience a lot more enjoyable!

Straw vs. Felt

So, when’s the best time to wear a straw or a felt? The short answer: Easter to Labor Day, Straw; Labor Day to Easter, Felt. Straw cowboy hats are lighter and more breathable, making them perfect for the warmer months. On the other hand, felt hats are thicker and offer more warmth, making them ideal for the cooler season. However, if you live in a warmer climate, start wearing your straw or felt whenever you want!

The Ultimate Hat Shape Guide

Choosing a cowboy hat shape comes down to what feels natural to you. Different creases and brim styles change the whole look, so it’s worth trying a few to see what fits your face and your style. Some shapes feel more classic, some lean more modern, and others sit right in the middle. There’s no right answer! Just pick what you’re comfortable in and what you’ll actually reach for every day. This hat shape guide from American Hat Co. is a great visual, but try to check out some different styles in person to be sure!

Storing Your Hat

If this is your first time buying a cowboy hat, there are some things you need to know about storing it – and yes, there is a right and wrong way. Always place it upside down on its crown if it’s out in the open, and avoid leaving it in hot cars or damp spaces, since heat and moisture can warp the hat or weaken the materials over time. I personally recommend getting a hat box – it’s the safest way to protect your hat from the elements of life. A little care in how you store your hat goes a long way in keeping it looking sharp season after season!

If you’re an avid traveler, consider investing in a HATPAC. It’s part backpack, part hat carrier, and alleviates any stress of traveling with a cowboy hat.

How to Clean Your Lid

Cleaning a felt cowboy hat is simple if you stick to the basics. Use a soft-bristle hat brush to gently sweep away dust, always brushing following the natural grain of the felt. Avoid harsh cleaners or household sprays, as they can damage the felt. If your hat needs a deeper refresh or reshaping, it’s best to take it to a professional hat shaper. With regular light cleaning and the occasional tune-up, your felt hat will stay looking crisp and well cared for!

No matter what hat you decide on, have fun shopping for the perfect one. I bet in the end you get more than just one! Don’t forget to bring your hat on over to the Rio Round-Up at Rio Las Vegas for a FREE nightly watch party during the NFR with Matt Merritt and Cowboy Lifestyle Network.
