Top 5 Things to Do at Houston Livestock Show & Rodeo 2023

Written by

With 20 days packed full of livestock shows, rodeos, concerts, trade shows, food vendors and so much more, it can be a daunting task to plan your visit to the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo (HLSR)! However, it really just all adds to the excitement; and these are the top 5 things we at Cowboy Lifestyle Network don’t think you’ll want to miss out on February 28 through March 19.

RODEOHOUSTON Super Series

Featuring a rodeo performance each day, this tournament-style competition has a total payout of $2,178,000 with each champion being awarded $50,000 plus round-winnings, a custom-made saddle and belt buckle, and an invitation to compete at RODEOHOUSTON in 2024. Earnings here count toward qualification for the PRCA world standings and Wrangler NFR, so you’re sure to see the best of the best no matter what performance you choose! There are five series with three rounds each, two semifinal rounds, and two wild card rounds, all wrapped up with the championship round Sunday, March 19 at 3:45 p.m.

Concerts

Following each rodeo performance, big-name artists take the rotating stage on top of the dirt in NRG Stadium; and there are so many artists you’ll want to be there for! The 2023 entertainment lineup includes Parker McCollum, Brooks & Dunn, Lauren Daigle, Bun B, Walker Hayes, Zac Brown Band, Jason Aldean, New Kids On The Block, Jon Pardi, Ashley McBryde, The Chainsmokers, Turnpike Troubadours, La Fiera de Ojinaga, Cody Jinks, Machine Gun Kelly, Kenny Chesney, Chris Stapleton, Cody Johnson, Brad Paisley and Luke Bryan.

Food

By going to NRG Park during the HLSR, you have the opportunity to try possibly the widest variety of food all in one place! Of course, you have your fried fair food; but you will also find some of your favorite restaurants, as well as cuisine from all around the world. The 2022 winners of the Gold Buckle Foodie awards included a deep fried jambalaya roll from Cajun Cowboy, the Berry Racer Caramel Apple from Munch-oes Bakery, an all-meat stuffed potato from Harlon’s BBQ, the Bonfire Funnel Cake Corndog, a bacon mac & cheese egg roll from The Finer Diner and a fried red velvet cupcake from Sills Funnel Cakes.

Livestock Shows

Today, the HLSR livestock show is considered the world’s largest and most prestigious livestock exposition. Thousands of heifer, gilt, sheep, dairy cattle, barrow, broiler, goat, lamb, steer, turkey, rabbit, llama, alpaca and dog exhibitors bring their hard work to the green shavings for a chance to take home the coveted title of HLSR champion. This is something that every HLSR visitor should make an effort to see at least once!

Shopping

Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo has more than 300 vendors every year! With this many commercial exhibit booths, you are sure to find multiple things you can’t live without. There will be western wear, ranch equipment, food, jewelry, grills, furniture and much more; so set aside plenty of time to do some shopping before heading to the rodeo!

Hannah Crandall

Originally from Earth, Texas, a small town in the Texas panhandle, I was raised around rodeo, agriculture, and the western lifestyle. With a degree from Texas A&M University, I have found a passion for promoting the lifestyle that made me who I am today. I am an experienced writer, marketer, and event professional with a strong desire to share the stories of those in our industry. When I’m not busy seeking out ways to promote the western way of life, I enjoy following those I care about around to rodeos, hunting, and going on runs with my blue-eyed, blue-merle Australian Shepherd.
