About Cody Rodeo

If you didn’t already know, Cody is the “Rodeo Capital of the World.” With an official start in 1919, the Cody Stampede rodeo has been held every summer making it one of the longest-running, successful professional rodeos. Additionally, they are also the only place in the country that has a rodeo performance nightly! That’s our kind of rodeo! Cody’s rodeo history started over 100 years ago with Buffalo Bill and his Wild West Show. It didn’t take long for Buffalo Bill to realize that Cody was special and he saw the need to preserve the west before it became overrun with civilization. Buffalo Bill passed away in 1917, bringing an end to the wild west chapter of America. In 1919 Clarence Williams headed up a rodeo celebration in Cody to commemorate Buffalo Bill Cody and the “Old West” he represented. The following year, the president of the event, Caroline Lockhart moved the Cody Stampede to the 4th of July. It wasn’t until 1938, that Carly Downing a former Wild West show performer, started the formal Cody Nite Rodeo, or Pup rodeo, as it was called then.
