The Fourth of July is right around the corner, and you know what that means: Cowboy Christmas! If you’re not familiar, Cowboy Christmas is the time around July 4th when numerous rodeos take place across the country. It’s a crucial time in a rodeo athlete’s season and can even determine if they make the NFR in December! One must-stop rodeo for athletes and spectators alike is the Livingston Roundup Rodeo in Montana. After celebrating their 100th anniversary last year, they’re back and better than ever for four thrilling nights of rodeo action, July 1–4. If you haven’t quite decided how you want to spend your Independence Day, take in one of the performances – you won’t regret it!

History

Back in 1926, a group of local Livingston businessmen had a simple but smart idea: create an event that would encourage travelers to linger in town a little longer. That idea gave rise to the Livingston Roundup, a rodeo that quickly became a beloved summertime tradition. The event thrived until World War II brought it to a pause. But in the late 1940s, a determined young local approached a businessman with a bold proposal: bring the Roundup back. That conversation sparked the revival of the rodeo, and just a few years later, in 1952, it officially became a professional event under the Rodeo Cowboys Association (RCA) – the organization that would later evolve into today’s PRCA.

Oldest Rodeo in Montana

Since then, the Livingston Roundup has become a proving ground for rodeo legends. Some of the sport’s biggest names have competed, and won, right here in July. Year after year, the event continues to raise the bar, bringing in top-tier contract professionals to deliver the oldest rodeo in Montana.

Building Community

Raising more than a quarter million dollars in sponsorships, the Livingston Roundup Association supports and is supported by its community year-round.

“I got a good crew. We love what we do. We have good community support from the people here in town in Park County. We have a lot of people from out of the United States here, so we’re well attended. I think we’ve become a destination spot. Probably because of Yeltsin Park and the Western lifestyle experience. We try to promote the Western lifestyle and we try to make our community better through our efforts. And the extra money we raise—we try to give it to people who need it.”
