In the day and age of big cities and fast cars, it’s commonplace for inaccurate and predictable depictions of the Wild West to heavily outnumber films that are worth spending money on. With the release of The Hateful Eight, Quentin Tarantino makes an intriguing addition to a genre of lemons. His appreciation and inquisitive approach to screenwriting and directing movies with settings in the Old West can be credited for conjuring greats like Django Unchained and Desperado. This particular tale stars some of Tarantino’s recurring actors including Samuel L. Jackson, Kurt Russell, Walton Goggins, and Tim Roth, which makes for a talented cast and captivating performances.

The action lies in a post-Civil War Wyoming as a bounty hunter and his fugitive make room for shady strangers on a stagecoach journey to Red Rock, where the fugitive, Daisy Domergue, played by Jennifer Jason Lee, will face execution. In efforts to wait out an approaching blizzard, the four arrive at Minnie’s Haberdashery where they are welcomed, or not so welcomed, by four unfamiliar faces as Minnie is nowhere to be found. While stowed in the cabin the octet discovers that no one can be trusted, and the tension boils between a hot mix of killers, fugitives, and Union and Confederate Army veterans, which makes for an intense thriller that doesn’t disappoint.

And while the plotline alone didn’t attract some to see the movie, the viewing experience did. The Weinstein Co. equipped only 100 theaters with refurbished 70mm film projectors and experienced projectionists as a part of the movies initial roadshow release over Christmas weekend. The old fashioned viewing experience was made complete with an overture and a 12-minute intermission, resulting in a staggering $4.6 million dollars in ticket sales. Despite multiple changes to the nationwide release date, The Hateful Eight is set to premiere January 8th. The CLN team looks forward to seeing the movie, and we hope you do too.
