Music Monday Featured Artist: Bobby Watson

Southern Country Rock artist Bobby Watson got his start the way many have, with a parent who was musically inclined and encouraged that talent to be passed on. “My dad was in the Navy so his hobby was to play a little bit and record his own stuff at home, but my mom is a great singer and she used to sing around whatever town we lived in. She encouraged me to sing at shows of hers I happened to be at, and like any teenager, I wasn’t super interested, but I did and it was a great experience for me.”

“My first girlfriend played guitar and that’s what really got me into playing. You know… girls always get us to get things.” Watson laughed. “After I went off to college, I started playing more at parties, tailgates and things like that. I really started getting into country music and loved all kinds of music, even the old soul types like Otis Redding and The Withers, but I also love stylistically, southern rock like the Allman Brothers and Chris Stapleton.”

During one college break, Watson called his dad and told him that he’d like to record some music when he visited next. He proceeded to record a handful of country covers, then went back to school and forgot about it. Little did he know, his mom took those recordings and sent them to a handful of labels up in Nashville. Bobby randomly got a call one day from a small label that said they loved what he had sent in and invited him to come up to Tennessee to play for them. Just like that Watson, at just 20 years old, had a team and producer who wanted to help develop him as an artist. He quit school and moved to Nashville from Florida to live in the family camper trailer and pursue music.

Watson performed with friends around town once in a while and continued to write his own songs. Another artist living in Nashville, originally from San Diego, invited Bobby to go out west to play with his band for a summer. During their stay, Watson met his now wife Paula, an Australian beauty that was working in the states for the season. After that summer, Watson went back east to finish school then decided that traveling was what he wanted to do. From study abroad in Panama to moving to the UK and Australia with Paula, music fell by the wayside. Fast forward a few years and a move back to the states, that musical spark reignited and Watson started to write and perform again.

Now, with a few EP’s released and numerous singles under his belt, Watson is in the process of completing a new album. The new project will be a true showcase of who Watson is as an artist with a unique sound that is rooted in country, but not truly dedicated to just one genre.
