Music Monday Artist Feature: Tony Kamel

Coastal Texas country artist, Tony Kamel recently released his latest album, Back Down Home, a chill Gulf Coast vibe that many won’t be expecting. Growing up on the eastern beaches of Texas, Tony says he wanted to write an album that truly encompassed the area he loves.

“It’s a groovy record, but I didn’t try to make it that way. I’m usually into more high-intensity songs, but for some reason, I was just feeling mellow this time. I think the record turned out pretty cool because of it. The studio we recorded at is very old school. It’s all analog, everything is a live performance. It’s all tracked and built on, we even filmed the whole thing, so we’ll be releasing those videos from time to time as well. I love recording this way because it adds character to the music. I love the imperfections that come from recording live. It gives music a sonic quality that doesn’t exist in the digital age.”

The Gulf Coast vibe that Tony writes about pulls from the funky vibes that are the Gulf. One of the songs on his record, The Surfer, is about an older gentleman who Tony used to see surfing all the time as he was growing up. One of the last times Tony was down at the beach, he saw the surfer again and decided to go talk to him. The man shared his life story and how he couldn’t surf anymore due to a hip replacement, but he still loved going down to the water and watching everyone else on the waves.

Outside of doing his thing as a solo artist, Tony is also the frontman for Grammy Nominated bluegrass band, Wood & Wire. While the band is currently on hold due to life changes among band members (ie: Tony’s adorable 4-month-old daughter and more), they’re definitely not done! One may ask how a Bluegrass band ends up in Austin, Texas. What started as a bunch of friends getting together to jam, turned into a touring band that ended up being a Texas staple walking the red carpet at the Grammys.
