On January 7, 2012, New York City hosted the first stop for the Professional Bull Riders series that ends in Las Vegas in October.
This was the sixth year Madison Garden has felt the thunder of the bulls, but this time around the city called off mutton-busting citing health concerns in refusing to give permits to the Professional Bull Riders organization to run the fan-favorite sideshow.
A publicist for the Professional Bull Riders, said: “Every time we come to New York City we have this fight with the city about whether we can even host the event.”
In this rodeo event, a child is affixed to the top of a sheep. The sheep starts to run as it tries to get the young human off its body. The surviving child who is be able to stay on top of the sheep for the longest time will be declared the winner of the event.
It saddens me to see the erosion of western traditions. When we lose the right to strap our children to free roaming sheep, I will pack my bags and move to Switzerland and take up knitting. Yes it may not be the greatest American invention. It may even cross the line into being ridiculous, but it is part of our national character.
Getting up in the morning, putting on our boots, and doing what the world considers impossible and insane is what we do. It is what we did at Kitty Hawk, the beaches of Normandy, and Sea of Tranquillity.
Don’t take away our right to take a little risk, and to look a little silly.
I would really like to hear what you have to say on this topic.
