Ogden Pioneer Days 2025

Written by

The summer rodeo run is in full swing and I, for one, am so excited! Some of the most iconic and historic rodeos throughout the year take place during the summer months, including the upcoming Ogden Pioneer Days. Celebrating its 91st anniversary this year, on July 18-24, OPD has been a top rodeo destination since its inception in 1934. And who doesn’t love watching thrilling rodeo action against a breathtaking backdrop like the Wasatch Mountains? I guarantee this is one event you don’t want to miss!

History

Ogden Pioneer Days was founded in 1934 not only to celebrate the city’s pioneer roots but also to help secure its future during the hardships of the Great Depression. With the nation in turmoil, Mayor Harman Peery saw an opportunity to boost the local economy and morale by tapping into the rodeo interests of wealthy cattle ranchers and drawing in tourists. His vision for a grand, Western-themed festival reached across the nation, and he even invited figures like President Franklin D. Roosevelt and Hollywood stars such as Abbott and Costello (only Costello showed). Peery aimed to put Ogden on the national map, and over the decades, Ogden Pioneer Days has grown into a nationally recognized celebration and ProRodeo Hall of Fame inducted event.

“I want to remind everyone of what has been built on the shoulders of so many over the past 90 years. We’re not shy about saying that we’re the best July 24th celebration in Utah. Our rodeo is the only one in Utah ranked in the top 5 along with being a PRCA Hall of Fame Rodeo. Add to the fact that our rodeo is held in the west’s most spectacular outdoor setting, and we’ve got things going for us that no other celebration or rodeo in America can match.”
