Church Rock, New Mexico are you ready? For the first time in league history the PBR’s (Professional Bull Riders) fastest-growing series, Pendleton Whiskey Velocity Tour will be kicking off at the beautiful and scenic Red Rock Park on September 18th at 7:00 pm MDT for the PBR Velocity Tour’s BUCKIN’ AT THE ROCK event.
You don’t want to miss out on this spectacular event as it is for one night only. The best bull riders in the world are coming together with the rankest bull athletes taking on the ultimate showdown of man versus beast. This is the most adrenaline-rushing event that’ll have you on the edge of your seat.
This might be the first stop taken in Church Rock but the Heart of Indian Country is no stranger at all to PBR action. In both 2006 and 2007, the developmental Touring Pro Division was welcomed. In 2006, L.J. Jenkins from Porum, Oklahoma won the inaugural event then in 2007, Jarrod Craig from Hillsboro, Texas seized the title in PBR’s most recent trip to Gallup.
Nearby in Window Rock, Arizona, the PBR Bucking on the Rez has taken place. In 2018, the Navajo Nation’s very own, Cody Jesus from Window Rock, Arizona won the event. In 2019 PBR World Champion, Jose Vitor Leme from Ribas do Rio Pardo, Brazil had a successful win. Unfortunately the past two years, the event was not held due to COVID-19 restrictions.
Not only will you be in the beautiful scenic Red Rock Park, but fans will also be immersed in the rich Navajo Nation culture as the PBR will be inviting five Native riders to compete in Church Rock. For the first-ever Global Cup event in the United States in 2019, the PBR made history by fielding an all Native American contingent. The PBR has become the very first professional sports league in modern history that showcases such a diverse team at the international level. 2018 PBR Rookie of the Year, Keyshawn Whitehorse (Navajo), and the now-retired Ryan Dirteater (Cherokee) are some of the PBR’s most accomplished Native American riders.
Once the tour stops in Church Rock it will tentatively be the 19th Pendleton Whisky Velocity event of the year. The series has stopped in cities including Greenville, South Carolina; Lexington, Kentucky; Pensacola, Florida and Grand Forks, North Dakota. The competition for the 2021 PBR Pendleton Whisky Velocity Tour Championship is off to a powerful start as the top six riders in series standings are separated by less than 50 points. Michael Lane from Tazewell, Virginia currently holds the No. 1 rank, 22 points ahead of No. 2 Conner Halverson from Gordon, Nebraska. Lane leads the series with two event wins, having also registered six additional Top-10 finishes on the Velocity Tour. The duo is followed by No. 3 Austin Richardson in Stephenville, Texas, No. 4 Manoelito de Souza Junior from Itamira, Brazil, and No. 5 Paulo Lima from Bezerros, Brazil.
On Saturday evening in Round 1, all forty riders will be attempting one bull each. Following the opening round, the top ten will then advance to the championship round where they will attempt one final bull, all in an effort to be crowned the event winner.
