About the USS Lexington
The USS Lexington is an Essex-class carrier that was built during World War II for the United States Navy. It commissioned in 1943 as the USS Lexington has set more records than any other Essex Class carrier in the history of naval aviation. The ship was the Navy’s longest-serving working carrier when decommissioned in 1991. During World War II, as part of the Fifth Fleet, the carrier spent 21 months in combat and participated in nearly every major operation in the Pacific Theater. Her planes destroyed 475 enemy aircraft on the ground and 372 more in the air. She destroyed or sank 300,000 tons of enemy cargo and damaged an additional 600,000 tons. The ship’s guns shot down 15 planes and assisted in downing five more.
Lexington sunk no less than four times reported by the Japanese. Everytime she sunk she returned to fight again. This led the propagandist, Tokyo Rose to give the USS Lexington a nickname, “The Blue Ghost”. The nickname is a tribute to the ship, air groups, and the crew that served abroad the USS Lexington. Lexington was decommissioned briefly after the war in 1947-1955. She operated mainly with the Seventh Fleet out of San Diego, California once she was reactivated. The Lexington was not involved in actual combat but kept an offshore vigil during tensions in Formosa, Laos, and Cuba. Lexington sailed into Pensacola, Florida in 1962 and began training operations which soon became the official designated CVT-16, Navy Training Carrier. Lexington is now settled as Corpus Christi, Texas has been selected as the permanent home to this national treasure. It is open as a museum today, come take a tour and soak in the rich history that the USS Lexington has to offer.
