PBR 101: How Does Bull Riding Work?
If you are new to professional bull riding, don’t worry. The basic concept is simple, but watching it unfold inside the arena is anything but. A bull rider must remain aboard the bull for eight seconds, using one hand to hold the bull rope while keeping the other hand free. If the rider successfully reaches the eight-second mark without being disqualified, the ride is scored.
A PBR ride can be worth up to 100 points: 50 points are awarded for the rider’s performance and 50 for the bull’s performance. Judges evaluate the rider’s control, body position and ability to counter the bull’s movements, while the bull is judged on factors such as power, speed, direction changes, kicking ability and athleticism.
That’s where the PBR Teams format gets especially interesting. Instead of one rider carrying the entire night, five riders compete for each team in a game. Their combined performance determines which team comes out on top. In other words, one spectacular ride can change the momentum, but five riders have to get the job done.
