Now put on by Morris Communications Company, LLC, Road to the Horse is an event that identifies the most superior colt starter based on their horsemanship methodology to communicate, educate and build a partnership with their colt. Morris’s Equine Group is responsible for some of the world’s largest and most prominent equine publications, including Western Horseman, Stallion Register, Barrel Horse News, Quarter Horse News, and Equine Journal.
Road to the Horse began in 2003 when Clinton Anderson, Curt Pate, and Josh Lyons competed in the El Camino del Caballo Challenge at the Cowtown Coliseum in Fort Worth, Texas. The idea continued and became successful because of the efforts of Steven and Tootie Bland, who wanted to share the message that more can be accomplished when a relationship with a horse is based on trust.
Since 2005, Road to the Horse has been held every year with the exception of 2020 due to the pandemic. In 2012, the event hosted international teams; and the Wild Card Competition was introduced in 2019 as a separate competition that takes place in September. It was after the 2019 event that Morris Communications Company, LLC took the reins of the event to create a powerhouse for advocacy of natural horsemanship training and practices.
In 2021, Wade Black earned the World Champion of Colt Starting title; and Cole Cameron won the Wild Card Competition. In addition to the championship titles, there are two awards given annually at Road to the Horse: the Jack Brainard Horsemanship Award, which started in 2013, and the Traveler Award, which started in 2011.
The 2022 Road to the Horse will be held in Lexington, Kentucky at the Kentucky Horse Park March 24-27. The event will feature four competitors and over $100,000 in cash and prizes contributed to by well-known industry sponsors, including YETI. The four competitors will include Brandi Lyons, Pat Parelli, Glenn Stewart, and Mike Major. Thursday, March 24, is considered a bonus day with no ticket required to participate in the exciting activities. March 25-27 will include the ticketed championship performances.
