DENVER (January 17, 2015) — With three rodeo performances on Saturday at the National Western Stock Show, there was plenty of action to keep the fans entertained.
The morning performance saw Wyoming’s Seth Hardwick score 83 points on Summit Pro Rodeo’s Dragon 45 in bareback riding. He came back at the matinee with an 81 and now leads the overall standings with 164 points on two rides.
College rodeo standout Trenton Montero became the first bull rider to get two scores by his name. He was one of four men to have qualified rides in the morning performance, then came back for the matinee and was the only rider to be successful. His total of 156 leads overall and is likely to get him back to the championship finals on Jan. 25.
Montero competed for New Mexico State University and qualified for the College National Finals Rodeo in bareback riding and bull riding. The all-around contender competed in both of those events here but didn’t have success in the barebacks.
Former National Western Stock Show Rodeo champions that are hoping to add the 2015 buckle to their trophy collections made the most of their opportunities today. Casey Martin who won the steer wrestling championship in 2013, had his first round steer today and stopped the clock in 5.0. This won’t get him any money in the round, but with a fast time here on Monday, he could make it back to the finals.
Cody DeMoss, from Heflin, La., has won the saddle bronc riding at this rodeo twice, in 2004 and 2012. He got on three horses Saturday night when the first two didn’t perform. The third one was a charm as he had an 83-point effort.
Bradley Harter, from Loranger, La., has also earned two saddle bronc riding titles in the Denver Coliseum. He had a 79-point ride Saturday night.
Mary Walker won the barrel racing title here last year and stopped the clock in 15.64 seconds Saturday night. Walker is going to need a fast run in the second round to have any hopes of a repeat championship.
DeMoss, Harter and Walker will all have their second round competition at the Sunday matinee performance beginning at 2 p.m.
There are two performances in the Denver Coliseum on Sunday, at 2 and 6:30 p.m.
