But who and what is Rodeo Naked? I was fortunate to interview Rodeo Naked’s founder, TJ Spoonhunter, and get a behind-the-scenes scoop on the company and its 2nd Annual Benefit Rodeo.
Spoonhunter, a Bareback and Bull rider, founded the clothing line Rodeo Naked in 2015 with the aim of creating a fashion line that would help up-and-coming cowboys and cowgirls make their rodeo dreams a reality. With each and every purchase from Rodeo Naked’s line, a portion of each sale is donated to help fund competition expenses for Rodeo Naked’s sponsored cowboys and cowgirls.
However, it isn’t only the cowboys and cowgirls that Rodeo Naked’s proceeds benefit. When asked about where the money from merchandise and rodeos is donated to, Spoonhunter shared, “last year we hosted our first benefit rodeo and it helped the victims of Hurricane Harvey.
I personally drove all the donations to Houston and surrounding areas from Arizona and volunteered at the Red Cross, delivering food and goods to shelters and churches that were in need.” When asked about the proceeds that will be collected from the 2nd Annual Benefit Rodeo, Spoonhunter explained that “this year with all the fires in California, we plan on donating the proceeds to the first responders and the families affected by the fires.
On the local level, we want to do something for our Veterans. There is a program called Horses for Heroes run by Hoofbeats with Heart that we want to donate to, where we can sponsor veterans with PTSD through equine therapy!”
This year’s 2nd Annual Benefit Rodeo is sure to carry on the Rodeo Naked tradition of community involvement and the continued support of current and future rodeo competitors. Spoonhunter explained that it is important for Rodeo Naked to be involved because, “Rodeo Naked is a means to be free and rodeo. With what I want to accomplish with the brand, putting on this rodeo gives our contestants another rodeo to compete in, keeping their dreams and the rodeo way of life alive.
Up and coming contestants are our future and if we keep providing opportunities for them to do so, it will keep the sport alive. As a member and director of the Grand Canyon Professional Rodeo Association I want to bring as much to the table as possible to help grow the organization and give these contestants another rodeo to add to their season. Not only does a rodeo help the contestants, but it also provides other businesses an opportunity to sponsor and become a vendor to help promote their business.
I believe it is important for Rodeo Naked to be involved, because we give back to a great cause and help support the future of our sport.”
Rodeo Naked will be returning to Horseshoe Park & Equestrian Centre (20464 East Riggs Road, Queen Creek, AZ 85142) for their 2nd Annual Benefit Rodeo. In addition to the full GCPRA lineup, Rodeo Naked is excited to announce that this year, a kid’s rodeo has been added, including Mutton Bustin’, Steer Riding, and Junior Barrel Racing.
The kid’s rodeo will occur at 5pm before each GCPRA performance. Gates will open at 4pm. The rodeo will also include two themed nights, one honoring first responders and the second honoring our past and present servicemen and women of the Armed Forces. Immediately following the Saturday evening performance, rodeo guests can also attend the 2nd Annual Benefit Rodeo Dance.
