New York and rodeo, two words that haven’t been synonymous in quite some time. That is going to change next year in June of 2020. RFDTV’s, The Cowboy Channel is returning rodeo back to Madison Square Garden for the first time in over 30 years. The legendary arena will welcome the cowboys and cowgirls of our generation to compete and put on a show stopping performance for all who attend.
The Challenge of Champions will include all of the classic rodeo events, including breakaway roping. And who better to showcase rodeo than the best of the best. Richie Champion, Trevor Brazile, Sherry Cervi, and J.B. Mauney are just a few of the professional athletes slated to be competing in New York. Sixty-five of rodeo’s top names will compete to win a piece of the 1 million dollar prize. With only five or six contestants in each event the action will be non stop.
Madison Square Garden has hosted many different kinds of performances, including numerous PBR events, but rodeo hasn’t been on the schedule since 1991. Patrick Gottsch, the founder of The Cowboy Channel, said he was encouraged by the success the Professional Bull Riders event has had over its 13-year run at the Garden. Rodeo seems to be evolving into the modern era more and more each year. Hopefully with the added success of Rodeo New York, it will continue to build momentum.
With four performances over three days, Rodeo New York is sure to impress. This endeavor is a great opportunity for rodeo and spectators alike. Hopefully bringing a little western culture into the big city will help demystify rodeo for those who may not know much about it.
