The History Behind the Name
The Rooftop Rodeo is certainly not on a rooftop, so how did the name come to be? While the rodeo itself dates back to 1908, it wasn’t called the Rooftop Rodeo until 1941. The name was introduced because of Estes Park’s 7500-foot altitude, and it became known to the public as having the highest altitude of any rodeo in America. Prior to 1941, the Rooftop Rodeo had been coined several names, including Frontier Days, Wild West Show, and Bronco Busting Contest.
Rooftop Rodeo
The Rooftop Rodeo is known to attract some top dollar rodeo athletes who come to Estes Park to try their luck in barrel racing, saddle bronc riding, bareback riding, tie-down roping, team roping, steer wrestling, and bull riding.
Gates open nightly at 5:00, and the rodeo kick-off show will begin at 6:30 each evening. The actual rodeo itself begins at 7:00, July 8th-13th! July 10th is Locals Night & First Responders Night, July 11th is Military Appreciation Night, July 12th is Fiesta at the Rodeo Night, and July 13th is Tough Enough to Wear Pink Night, so dress accordingly!
