San Angelo Rodeo is back for another exciting year! Running now through April 21st, 2024. The rodeo is held in the Foster Communications Coliseum located at 50 E 43rd St, San Angelo, TX 76903 on the San Angelo Fairgrounds. It’s sure to offer their fans and competitors a top-notch event. The turnout of competitors is some of the largest numbers in the PRCA since this rodeo is a “Permit Max” and welcomes new competitors as well as the familiar faces of rodeo to come and compete.
The San Angelo Stock Show and Rodeo is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization with over 1,000 passionate volunteers. These volunteers work all year long dedicating their time to preserving western heritage and promoting all things agriculture. They produce many events throughout the year including the Cinch Roping Fiesta, the Silver Spur Circuit Octoberfest AQHA Show, the San Angelo Stock Show, and Rodeo Quarter Horse Show, and of course, the annual Stock Show and Rodeo. This is in hopes to produce events that draw in different people and organizations into the town of San Angelo. With San Angelo Rodeo ranking as one of the nation’s largest payouts in rodeo, the stock show also provides the largest economic impact of any event held in the city of San Angelo.
The history behind the San Angelo Stock Show and Rodeo is as rich as the payout. The first-ever event took place on the San Angelo Polo Fields in 1932. In 1934, the event was moved to the fairgrounds, and they started what they called an experimental “baby” rodeo for entertainment purposes.
In 1955 the rodeo changed to a professional rodeo, and in 1959, the San Angelo Coliseum was completed. As years went on many improvements and renovations were made to the fairgrounds. These improved facilities have helped the rodeo and stock show to continue to flourish into one of the highest rodeos for total entries as well as one of the largest livestock shows in the nation.
Each of the 12 PRCA-sanctioned rodeo events offers bareback riding, saddle bronc riding, calf roping, team roping, steer wrestling, women’s barrel racing, and bull riding, with all performances including Mutton’ Bustin.
Be sure to check out the PRCA Rodeo performances that are going on all month long here.
