The Apache are descendants of the Athabascan family who migrated to the Southwest in the 10th century. Over a period of time, many bands of Apache have been relocated to the reservation from their traditional homelands in Texas, New Mexico, Arizona, Mexico, and California. The San Carlos Apache Reservation was established by executive order on November 9, 1871. The San Carlos Apache tribal lands encompass 1.8 million acres of breathtaking land that traverses going across three regions of desert, plateau, and mountain country landscapes.

When you visit the reservation, be sure to stop by the San Carlos Apache Culture Center located in Peridot, Arizona, on Highway 70, at mile marker 272 on the north side. The Cultural Center is home to over 15,000 members of various bands of Apache. There you can see Peridot jewelry, paintings, carvings, sculptures, and books full of the rich history of the Apache. Here you will find a unique culture and people living in what we call The Beauty Way, “Walking in Beauty”. There is so much information and a wealth of knowledge that awaits you here at the San Carlos Apache Culture Center.
