When a cowboy or cowgirl in California wants to find an exciting rodeo, they always look to the San Dimas Western Days Rodeo. This PRCA Pro Rodeo event, which was held October 3-4 at the Horsethief Canyon Park in San Dimas, California, celebrated its 21st anniversary with perhaps the best competition yet. With media coverage from the Cowboy Lifestyle Network, Ak-Chin Indian Community, and the Earnhardt Auto Road Team, this year’s event gave rodeo fans plenty to cheer about. Offering some of the sport’s most exciting competitors and non-stop action, fans definitely got their money’s worth at this year’s event.
The San Dimas Western Days Rodeo has a rich and unique history. The rodeo’s arena is named in honor of Tex Shoemaker, who was known for his true western spirit and flair for entrepreneurial ventures. A former law enforcement officer, Tex also had a gift for leather craft and was widely known for being an old-school cowboy whose word was as good as gold. One of the major movers and shakers in San Dimas, the city council overwhelmingly agreed to name the rodeo’s arena in honor of Tex for his undying commitment to the city and its well-being.
Special Buckaroos
One of the most unique aspects of the San Dimas Western Days Rodeo is the Special Buckaroos Challenge. A yearly event, it pairs special needs children with a professional cowboy or cowgirl to let them compete in such events as bull riding, calf roping, barrel racing, and bareback riding. The kids compete by riding stick horses, specially-designed bareback horses and bulls, and dummy steers. All participants in this year’s event received a t-shirt, bandana, lariat rope, and a photo of them with their cowboy or cowgirl rodeo partner.
Thrilling Competitions
As is always the case, this year’s PRCA pro rodeo event featured some of the most closely-contested battles yet between competitors. Fans were treated to seeing some of the world’s best professionals compete in a variety of events, such as:
