Established in 1933, the Sandhills Stock Show and Rodeo is held every January in Odessa, Texas; and for professional rodeo cowboys, it’s the beginning of winter rodeos in the great state. The event will be held at the Ector County Coliseum, 4201 Andrews Hwy, Odessa, TX 79762. It will kick off on January 3-13. Tickets are on sale now!
What started as just a stock show, quickly grew into a premiere horse show in 1940; and by 1955, the event began welcoming professional rodeo cowboys and cowgirls to Odessa to compete. Now, the rodeo is a major draw for fans to experience the event, but the stock show remains a very important piece as the only junior steer show in Texas exclusively for Hereford cattle and only including fine wool lambs in the lamb show.
In addition to the rodeo, there is a ladies’ breakaway roping, a team roping and team roping match, a rodeo dance and a well-respected queens contest. Speaking to the prestige of the queens contest, the current Miss Rodeo Texas, Brylee Johnson, carried her Miss Rodeo Sandhills title to the state pageant. A successful event in both stock show and rodeo regards, the Sandhills Stock Show & Rodeo awards more than $15,000 in scholarships alone to local youth and young adults.
